How the result is determined

More than a basic vendor match

Vendor prefix

The tool checks the longest matching IEEE assignment prefix available in the local database.

Unicast or multicast

The least-significant bit of the first octet identifies an individual or group address.

Universal or local

The second-least-significant bit identifies globally administered and locally administered addresses.

A locally administered address may be randomized by an operating system, manually configured, or assigned by virtualization software. In that case, an IEEE vendor match may not identify the actual device manufacturer.
